Description

SCOUT is an assembled and ready to use wheeled WiFi robot that combines mobility and ability to grasp and manipulate objects. It can be used to develop a intelligent robotic assistant, security robot or a variety of other projects.

SCOUT is controlled by a PC via a wireless connection (11Mbps; WiFi 802.11 ) with dual serial communication channels. Sensor data, streaming audio and video from the robot to the PC as well as the commands sent to the robot via wireless link pass at rates exceeding 10Hz. That speed allows to stream the video up to 4 fps and control the robot in real-time. To control the robot manually, the controlling computer should be equipped 2 (included) joystick controllers that separately control the robot and arm motion. Software modules enable a user to see and hear via the robot and talk through the robot's onboard speaker. A camera mounted on the wrist of right arm to provides viewing from virtually any perspective.

Dr. Robot's Scout is equipped with two gripping arms that optionally provide the robot with either one or two wrist-mounted CMOS cameras. The wrist-mounted cameras greatly facilitate remote manipulation of objects and improve the robot's ability to survey its surroundings. Each of the robot's arms has 5 degrees of freedom. The lifting capacity of each gripper is 300 g while the chassis has a carrying capacity of 6 kg.

SCOUT is equiped with two 12V motors with over 300oz./inch torque each and travels at a top speed of 75 cm/sec.

The package includes a charging unit for Ni-MH battery. The battery allows 3 hours for nominal operation.

Sensors

The Scout robot has 6 infrared sensors, 3 ultrasonic sensors, speaker and microphone. Its bumper is equipped with shocks in case of a collision. The two front lamps iluminate the front sourrounding. Additional sensors such as supplementary sonar sensors, temperature sensors, acceleration/tilting sensor, or customized sensors can be added.

Software

SCOUT includes all WiRobot development software components (MS Windows 2000 and up), enabling easy access to all data and information in a standard Microsoft Windows programming environment (e.g., MS VB and VC++). For users of non-Windows operating systems (e.g., Linux), Dr Robot will provide the raw communication protocol for direct integration with any other system/device. Fine speed and position control is pre-programmed.

Pros

  • Gripping arms.
  • Color video and two-way audio capability.
