(5) | Trilobite vs Roomba | October 06, 2006 |
|
I own a Trilobite and a Roomba Discovery. Both machines work quite well. The Roomba takes much more routine maintenance to keep running. This involves removing rotating brushes and "raking out " tangled hair, threads, lint ect. (about every 5th vacuum cycle) The cloth dust filter also needs cleaning after every vacuum session. The Trilobite on the other hand has been maintenance free since the day I bought it. Once every two weeks or so I dump the dust container, change dust filter and im ready to go. The instruction manual reccomends inspecting/cleaning the roller brush each time you empty the dust bin. Upon inspection, the roller brush never required any cleaning whatsoever. The Trilobite also works MUCH better on medium pile carpet than my Roomba. The Roomba seems to be more of a robotic sweeper than vacuum. The Trilobite delivers real vacuum suction. The Trilobite is also extreemly handsome. Pictures do not do it justice. Even the inner working components scream superb craftsmanship and quality. Cons: Trilobite dust filters are expensive! Electrolux recommnends replacement every time dust bin is emptyed. I re-use mine by cleaning with my shop vacuum and hand washing with woolite. (like brand new). Trilobite has no abilty to progam scheduled cleaning. Yes, agreed, the Trilobite is expensive. I figure it this way. How much would I spend paying a house keeper to vacuum for the next couple of years any time need ?

I bought a used EL520A on ebay (the US version, with stair sensor and most of the 2.0 improvements, sadly lacking the scheduler), and it is unstoppable. if it does eat something it can 't handle, it will stop and tell you it 's jammed, instead of setting itself on fire (compare to your upright). it has a manufacture year of 2004, and the battery life is now down to about 40 minutes instead of the 60 minutes reported for new products. (not that it matters, it 'll recharge itself during cleaning if need be). I 'd have to say it 's single pass efficiency is higher than our DC07. when i got it, it was squeaking, but the bearings on the brush bar pull apart, and a bit of grease fixed things up easily (user serviceable component!). I will probably buy another one or two of these as time goes, so i don 't have to move the charging base from room to room (it makes a difference when it 's mapping the room size, as it appears to use the base as endpoints for measuring. otherwise it just guesses).

This is a super product, very advanced but still rugged.
Its a must if you have a dog. If you dont, then this might be overkill. However, since it can vacuume every day the amount of free dust will be reduced to almost nothing.
