Editor's Opinion

The best roomba available.

Description

The new iRobot Roomba 570 has twice the cleaning power of the Roomba Discovery and dramatically increased reliability. Improved navigation, anti-tangle technology, cleaning of edges and corners, larger dustbin, and improved filtration of dust and allergens make this robotic vacuum cleaner a real breakthrough. It will even tell you how to set it up or when something is wrong.

The Roomba 570 is much more reliable than the older models or its competitors. It should last 3 to 5 years of daily use. This is a great improvement if you take into account that most robotic vacuum cleaners break after 1 year.

The Roomba 570 features the Wireless Command Center (unavailable in other models), which allows you to steer and control your Roomba from across the room.

The Roomba 570 (and 560) uses a Lighthouse technology. The "Virtual Wall Lighthouse" ensures that a Roomba has completely cleaned a room before allowing it to move on to the next room. Unlike the old virtual walls, which used IR to communicate with Roomba, the Lighthouse uses three IR beams and RF to allow for a systematic room-to-room cleaning. As the robot begins cleaning a room, the Lighthouse acts as a barrier. When the Roomba has finished cleaning the room, it sends a signal to the lighthouse, which instructs Roomba to pass into the next room. The Lighthouse also helps this robotic vacuum cleaner to understand how large a room is, thus making it more efficient.

The bottom of the Roomba 500 series has been overhauled and made modular . This makes the new Roomba 570 easy to clean and almost everything is user replaceable. iRobot claims that this, along with better seals that keep out grit, will extend the life of the robotic vacuum five-fold. The modular components also make the Roomba even more hackable than before.

The iRobot Roomba 570 rolls around the house sensing dirt and vacuuming the floor for about 45 minutes per room. According to iRobot, all models of the Roomba 500 series have a larger chamber for dirt, a more powerful motor and the vacuum power has been increased by 100 percent.

Improved navigation, wall following, and coverage patterns provide the most efficient cleaning of the entire room, along kickboards, cabinet edges, in corners, under and around furniture.

An array of IR sensors running along the front bumper and the optimized software helps Roomba to slow down a bit before impact, so it does not bump into your furniture anymore.

The brushes on the underside were re-designed to shoot larger chunks of debris into the bin. The suspension on the wheels was improved to give Roomba greater mobility over thresholds. The new Roomba now works on big thick carpets too.

The Roomba 500 series finally overcomes the tangle problem by stalling the brushes momentarily whenever a tassel is encountered, then moving away. However, this feature is not perfect. Smaller cords (like cellphone power cord) will still get munched.

You can schedule up to seven different cleaning times for Roomba to clean when it's most convenient for you. Roomba 570 will clean 3-4 rooms on a single charge, will get into hard-to-reach areas like wall edges and beneath furniture while avoiding stairs and other drop-offs. Roomba 570 automatically adjusts from carpets to hard floors and back again.

When its battery is running low, or when the cleaning is complete, Roomba automatically returns to the self-charging Home Base to dock and recharge.

The fine particle filter traps dust, pollen and other allergens inside Roomba's large, bag-less dustbin.

  • Cleans around furniture and along wall edges.
  • Automatically adjusts from carpets to hard floors and back again.
  • Detects dirtier areas and spends more time cleaning them.
  • Automatically senses and avoids stairs and other drop-offs.
  • Automatically returns to its self-charging Home Base to recharge.
  • Schedule up to seven cleaning times per week.
  • Anti-tangle technology keeps Roomba from getting stuck on cords, carpet fringe and tassels.
  • Much quieter it is than the previous version.
  • Cleans up to 4 rooms on a single battery charge.

Cons

  • Smaller cords will still get tangled.
  • You still need to empty its dust bin.
  • No attachments or stair-cleaning capability.
