Editor's Opinion

I like the nice selection of sensors and the fact that it is programmable. Unfortunately you can build only one type of robot. A great introductory robot.

Description

The Scribbler is a fully programmable, intelligent robot with multiple sensor systems that allow it interact with people and objects. It uses sound and light sensors to navigate on its own.

It comes pre-programmed with 8 Demo Modes to show off its capabilities ("light seeking behavior", "object detection and avoidance while moving" and "following a line").

What is great about Parallax BASIC Stamp-controlled robots is that it is reprogrammable. Unlike many toy robots, the Scribbler can be custom-programmed by its owner through a personal computer interface.

The Scribbler interacts with the world: It has light sensors to detect the direction of light. It uses infrared sensors to see objects in front or below, enabling it to thread its way through an obstacle course or follow lines drawn on the floor. It communicates with us using lights, sounds and music. All of this can be controlled, and the Scribbler is fully programmable.

This Robot gets its name from its ability to draw lines and patterns on the floor as it moves.

Programming

The Scribbler Robot has a reprogrammable brain - the BASIC Stamp 2 microcontroller. You can write your own program with your choice of free software, connect Scribbler to your personal computer using the serial cable provided, download the program, disconnect the serial cable, and your Scribbler is ready to go on a mission.

Programming the Scribbler requires a PC running Windows 2000/XP with an available serial port OR a USB port with a USB to Serial Adapter.

The BASIC Stamp Microcontroller

The BASIC Stamp Microcontroller is a very small computer about the size of a postage stamp. It is designed to be the reprogrammable for just about any kind of invention. Its easy-to-learn PBASIC programming language makes the BASIC Stamp widely popular. In fact, BASIC Stamp microcontrollers like the ones inside Scribbler Robots can be found in all sorts of applications and inventions.

Pros

  • Fully programmable.
  • Lots of sensors.
